‘Pashchimbanga Divas’ Row: BJP Accuses Police Of Blocking Rally, TMC Calls Celebration Compelled

The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Mamata Banerjee, and the opposition BJP engaged in a political slugfest on Friday over the celebration of ‘Pashchimbanga Divas’. Union Minister and West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar accused Kolkata Police of obstructing the get together’s efforts to look at the day.
Majumdar alleged that police tried to cease his two-wheeler rally from reaching Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s residence on Elgin Highway in south Kolkata.
The BJP, following a central authorities notification, marks June 20 — the date in 1947 when the undivided Bengal Meeting voted for the partition of the state — as ‘Pashchimbanga Divas’.
Earlier this morning, BJP Yuva Morcha members gathered on the Bhowanipore residence of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, the Jan Sangh founder, earlier than planning to cycle and stroll to Netaji Bhavan, a few kilometre away.
Majumdar alleged, “we instructed the police that we are going to solely carry the Tricolour and no get together flags on this rally. Even then the police obstructed our motion and arrested our staff.”
A small group, together with Majumdar and state BJP Yuva Morcha chief Indranil Khan, later managed to achieve Netaji’s home and garland his bust.
“We failed to know the police’s logic behind this obstruction. This wasn’t a political rally and our vacation spot was Netaji’s home which lies in the identical ward as that of the residence of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. It’s evident that we are going to both stroll or attain there on bikes,” Khan added.
West Bengal Opposition chief Suvendu Adhikari led legislators on a vibrant march from the meeting to Dr Mukherjee’s statue on Purple Highway, the place they garlanded it and chanted slogans calling for enduring recognition of June 20 as ‘Pashchimbanga Divas’.
“This can be a historic day which we should observe,” Adhikari stated.
The row centres on which date needs to be formally recognised as West Bengal Statehood Day. The ruling TMC authorities has declared Poila Baisakh — the Bengali New 12 months — because the statehood day, passing a decision within the meeting.
In response to the allegations, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh dismissed the BJP’s actions as contrived.
Ghosh stated: “The folks of Bengal have already chosen their statehood day on the primary day of the Bengali calendar. It’s a day near the hearts of all Bengalis. The state meeting has already endorsed it. It doesn’t matter the place a motley band of BJP staff collect and attempt to drive a celebration which lacks spontaneity and with which the folks haven’t any direct affiliation.”
West Bengal’s Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sobhandeb Chatterjee accused the BJP of undermining the secular spirit of the Structure, calling the celebration “politically motivated”.
He stated the Poila Baisakh decision had already been endorsed by the state meeting and criticised the BJP’s sudden curiosity in June 20.
