Goa might face Christmas beef scarcity as merchants on strike in opposition to cow vigilantism
Goa might face beef scarcity forward of Christmas and New 12 months with meat merchants within the state occurring a strike to protest in opposition to ‘elevated harassment’ by cow vigilante teams.
The shut-down began on 24 December 2024, Monday underneath the banner of Quraishi Meat Merchants Affiliation (QMTA).
In a letter to chief minister Pramod Sawant, the affiliation claimed there was a rise in assaults from right-wing Hindu organisations on outlets which promote beef legally.
“The latest assault occurred in Margao. We would like motion in opposition to these teams. We want safety from the federal government,” stated Abdul Bepari, a QMTA member.
Police have didn’t take motion regardless of receiving complaints, he stated, including that meat merchants would proceed the strike until they get an assurance from the federal government about their safety.
As per authorities statistics, 20-25 tonnes of beef is bought within the coastal state each day, and the sale will increase throughout vacationer and festive seasons.
