The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday carried out searches towards Congress’ Bellary MP E Tukaram and three MLAs in Karnataka as a part of a cash laundering probe into the alleged Valmiki rip-off, sources knowledgeable.

It has been learnt that the premises linked to Tukaram and the three MLAs are being searched below the provisions of the Prevention of Cash Laundering Act (PMLA). The three leaders being investigated by the investigative company are: NT Srinivas, NB Reddy and JN Ganesh.

It’s alleged that the cash was withdrawn from the Karnataka Valmiki Scheduled Tribe Improvement Company funds and was spent within the Lok Sabha elections. The ED has alleged that the money siphoned from the Valmiki funds was utilized in Bellary constituency through the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

In 2024, BJP chief CN Ravikumar, who’s an MLC, disclosed the matter in a press convention, following which the central investigative businesses — CBI and ED — entered the probe into this rip-off involving 89 crore.

In line with the preliminary allegation, about 21 crore was withdrawn from the funds of Karnataka Valmiki Scheduled Tribe Improvement Company and spent over the last Lok Sabha elections in Bellary Lok Sabha.

The cash laundering case probe started after FIRs have been registered by Karnataka Police and CBI alleging that funds price crores of rupees have been diverted from the accounts of the Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki ST Improvement Company (KMVSTDC) and despatched to “pretend accounts” earlier than being laundered via shell entities.

The company was established in 2006 with a main deal with the socio-economic improvement of the Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities in Karnataka by operating welfare schemes for them.
