Maria Shriver is opening up on her “brutal” divorce from Arnold Schwarzenegger. In her new guide, I Am Maria, the 69-year-old detailed how her ex-husband’s infidelity that led to their separation left her emotionally damaged.

“It broke my coronary heart, it broke my spirit, it broke what was left of me,” Shriver wrote in an excerpt of the guide obtained by Individuals. The previous First Woman of California ended her 25-year marriage with the Terminator star in 2011 after he admitted to fathering a toddler with housekeeper Mildred Baena.
Schwarzenegger secretly welcomed his son Joseph Baena from Mildred in October 1997. After the information went public, Shriver filed for divorce, ending their decades-long marriage. “With out my marriage, my dad and mom, a job — the dam of my lifelong capital-D Denial simply blew aside,” Shriver stated in her guide.

“Now, a lot has been written in regards to the finish of my marriage, and admittedly I don’t really feel like I would like or need to talk about it right here, or wherever,” Shriver went on earlier than lauding her youngsters — Katherine, 35, Christina, 33, Patrick, 31, and Christopher, 27 — for displaying “grace, valor, and braveness” throughout her divorce.
Shriver defined how “every part about their [her kids] world and the sanctity of their dwelling acquired uprooted instantly,” including that she “was consumed with grief and wracked with confusion, anger, worry, disappointment, and anxiousness” and “was not sure now of who I used to be, the place I belonged.”
“Actually, it was brutal, and I used to be terrified,” the journalist admitted. Shriver additional revealed that she cried alone at the hours of darkness whereas sitting on the ground of her resort room, pondering, “Maria, this doesn’t need to be the tip of you.”
