One nation, one election: Cong calls it bid to divert, Mamata says assault on democracy
With the Union Cupboard approving payments to implement ‘one nation, one election (ONOE)’, the Congress on Thursday reiterated its opposition to the very thought of simultaneous polls and accused the federal government of attempting to divert consideration from “questions being raised on the electoral integrity of the democratic system”.
The Union cupboard, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, authorised payments to implement ONOE and the draft legislations are prone to be launched in Parliament within the ongoing winter session, sources stated.
“The Union Cupboard has cleared the Invoice on One Nation One Election. Kharge, in a letter to the secretary of the high-level committee on ‘one nation, one election’ on 17 January 2024, had stated, “The Indian Nationwide Congress is strongly against the very thought of ‘One Nation, One Election’.
