‘One Nation, One Election’ won’t profit states, say Sibal, Quraishi

Senior Supreme Court docket advocate Kapil Sibal and former chief election commissioner of India, S.Y. Quraishi, have criticised the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, asserting that it will hurt the states and erode their regional significance.

They shared their views throughout a panel dialogue on the DMK Authorized Wing Convention in Chennai on Saturday, 18 January.

The third state convention of the DMK Authorized Wing was inaugurated by the occasion’s normal secretary, Duraimurugan, at St. George’s Anglo-Indian College.

Through the dialogue, Kapil Sibal remarked, “India is a union of states — that is enshrined within the Preamble of our Structure. By advancing this proposal, you’re undermining the states and trying to dismantle the foundational construction of our democracy.”

He elaborated, “One nation, one vote. One nation, one faith. One nation, one language. One nation, one political occasion. That is the path you’re heading in direction of. You might be eroding the essence of our Republic.

“This concept is being compelled upon us and not using a nationwide debate or session with political events. Nevertheless, I imagine the folks of India won’t settle for this, and I’m assured that Tamil Nadu will strongly oppose it.”

Sibal, who can also be a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, emphasised that the ‘One Nation, One Election’ coverage would negatively impression the federal construction of India.
