A tsunami warning has been issued for Papua New Guinea after a robust magnitude 6.9 earthquake on Saturday, April 5, 2025, morning, in line with the U.S. Geological Survey.

A tsunami warning has been issued for Papua New Guinea after a robust magnitude 6.9 earthquake on Saturday (April 5, 2025) morning, in line with the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake was shallow, putting the Pacific island nation at a depth of 10 kilometres (6 miles). It was centred 194 km (120 miles) east of the city of Kimbe, on the island of New Britain.

The USGS issued a tsunami warning for waves of 1 to three metres alongside the Papua New Guinea shoreline after the temblor on Saturday morning native time. A warning about smaller waves of 0.3 m was issued for close by Solomon Islands.There have been no rapid experiences of injury.
